Barren Fork Coal Mining Camp

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Barren Fork Coal Camp was a major coal mining community in the early 1900s. Now part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, Barren Fork includes trails, horse camp and historic and cultural experiences to visitors.

Barthell Coal Mining Camp

Dating back to 1902, Barthell Coal Mining Camp was the first coal camp established in the region by the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company. After being abandoned as an operational coal mining camp, it was purchased by the Koger family who restored the camp to the look and feel it held in the early 1900s period. Today, visitors can tour into the mine, eat in the Coal Miner's diner, or even rent one of the miner's cabins.

McCreary County Museum, Stearns, KY

Located on Henderson St in downtown, historic Stearns, the museum features the history and stories of this region, with special emphasis on the life of coal mining. Step back in time with a trip to the museum.

Falls 4-H Mountain Craft Center

Located on KY Highway 90(Scenic Byway) in an historic 1842 log cabin, the craft center is filled with handcrafted, locally made items from artisans and crafters in McCreary County, KY. Visit www.mountaincraftcenter.com online. 

 

Sandhill Conservation Camp

The camp rose from the remains of a family farm dating back to the 1800s and was established as a 4-H camp in 1959. The land that is the camp was owned by the US Forest Service for many years before being deeded to the McCreary County Fiscal Court(county government) in the 1980s. The camp currently serves the community and visitors with shelter houses, RV and primitive campsites, playground and basketball court areas, and open fields for festivals and events. The camp is home to the annual Blazin' Bluegrass Festival and will host the Princess Cornblossom Native Heritage Festival which will kick off its first year in October 2008. Stearns Historical District

Stearns was the hub and headquarters for the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company, founded in 1902 by Justis S. Stearns. The industry played a major role in the development of the local economy for much of the 20th century. Stearns was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and now features restaurants, scenic railway, gift shops and more.
