Native Heritage Festival

Saturday October 25th

Sandhill 4-H Camp, Hwy 700E Whitley City, KY

About the Festival

The Princess Cornblossom Native Heritage Festival will be in its first year in 2008. The festival is being held to honor and celebrate the culture, history and heritage of the native peoples of this region, and to attract visitors to our region to learn more about this area and all it offers.

The festival will offer two days of events with Friday October 24th being a kid's day as we invite regional schools to bring groups to experience the demonstrations and displays. Friday evening events are currently being planned to include the presentation of a play based on one interpretation of the legend of Princess Cornblossom and native storytelling and history programs.

Saturday October 25th will be a general admission day at the camp with dance, drum and other native demonstrations, displays, vendors and music.

Camping(both RV and primitive) will be available at the Sandhill Camp, and a number of area lodging opportunities exist.

We will soon be soliciting and accepting applications for vendors for this event including native crafts, food, demonstrators and exhibits, as well as drummers, dancers and others. Check back soon for information or e-mail us

Who was Princess Cornblossom? Did she even exist?

These questions are not easy to answer. There are several different versions of the story behind the legend of Cornblossom, ranging from those who say she never existed, to those who say she was the daughter of the Great War Chief Doublehead who was fatally wounded in a massacre of women and children in 1810 at Yahoo Falls. The McCreary County Tourist Commission, primary sponsor of the Princess Cornblossom Native Heritage Festival, does not take a position in the debate over the truth in this legend. Instead, we focus on the interest generated by the story and welcome all varying stories.

There is a state historical marker recognizing the burial site of Princess Cornblossom, located near the Orie S Ware Masonic Lodge on KY Highway 1651 in Stearns, KY. The exact burial site, if one exists, is still debated by many.
