Fun Fact:
Sheltowee (meaning Big Turtle) was the name given to Daniel Boone when he was adopted into the Shawnee tribe as the son of the great war chief, Blackfish.

From the casual stroller to the serious backpacker, McCreary County has much to offer with over 90 miles of marked trails and many more unmarked trails and cross-country opportunities. Over 54 miles of the 269 miles long Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail are located in McCreary County running from the Cumberland Falls across the county to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The Stearns Ranger District Trails, Barren Fork Camp Trails and OHV Trails comprise the remainder of the marked trail system. Maps of the trails and other detailed trail information can be found on the Daniel Boone National Forest Stearns Ranger District trail information page.

But don't stop there. Once you explore the marked trail system, venture off on the many unmarked trails or boldly explore McCreary County's pristine wilderness like Daniel Boone on his trek through the area.
